CoMath Update for October 3, 2019
Event News
In Colorado
- CCTM: Instead of holding a 2020 conference, the Colorado Council of Teachers of Mathematics has decided to hit the road and hold a larger number of smaller events around the state. Stay tuned to the CCTM website for announcements about these events. If your school is interested in hosting an after-school CCTM event, send an email to contact@cctmath.org and your region representative will see if something can be arranged.
- CML: The next meeting of the Colorado Math Leaders will be held using Zoom from 10:00 to noon on Wednesday, October 16. To join or follow CML, you can join their mailing list at https://groups.io/g/comathleaders/.
- Math on the Planes: The Colorado Council for Learning Disabilities will be holding Math on the Planes on February 28-29, 2020, with Barbara Dougherty returning with new material as the presenter. See the CCLD website for more information.
- NCME: The National Council on Measurement in Education held their special conference on classroom assessment at CU Boulder on September 18-19. It was a great event and I was so happy to see people there from districts around the state! The conference organizers are working to post session materials and videos of the keynotes on their website, and I'll probably have more to say about this event after those are posted.

- NCTM MET Grants: The next round of Mathematics Education Trust grants are due November 1st! On their website, I'm counting 20 different types of grants, some of which award multiple grantees. Start looking at their requirements now and let me know if I can help you write or review your application.
- Jane Ortner Education Award: Do you integrate music into your math class, or know someone who does? There's an award program just for you! Recipients of the Jane Ortner Education Award receive a $3000 honorarium, a $1000 grant for their school, and two tickets to the Grammys plus travel and accommodations. Apply by December 4, 2019.
Student Opportunities
- MATHCOUNTS: My path to becoming a math teacher and educator began in 7th grade when I joined my school's MATHCOUNTS team. The program is still running strong, including a competition series, the National Math Club, and a video challenge. Information about those programs and other resources are available on the MATHCOUNTS website.
- Future City Competition: The Future City Competition is a national program in which middle school students design model cities of the future. The deadline to register a team from your school is October 31, 2019, and the state competition will be held at the Colorado School of Mines on January 18, 2020. The $25/team registration fee will be waived in Colorado for the 2019-2020 competition.
