CoMath Update for November 14, 2022

I'm behind (again!) at sending a CoMath Update! In this edition, I have news of upcoming CCTM events, some job openings, and more to share about the Launch Years Initiative.

CCTM Webinars

The Colorado Council of Teachers of Mathematics have two upcoming webinars this month:

• On Wednesday, November 16, Dr. Joseph Bolz will present "EmPowering Students Post-Pandemic" from 7:00-8:00 pm. Register for Joe's session here.

November CoMath Conversation: What is the Launch Years Initiative and how do I get involved?

In September, Colorado joined the Launch Years Initiative, an effort by the Charles A. Dana Center to bring together states to work on high school and postsecondary mathematics pathways. What does that mean for me and for my school? How do I get involved? Join the November CoMath Conversation on Thursday, November 17, from 4:00-5:00 pm by registering via Zoom.

Job Openings

• PhET at CU Boulder is seeking an interested person near the Boulder/Longmont area who can assist with collecting data in two to four K-1 classrooms. This is a 50% position with benefits. The candidate  must be bilingual, must be local with the ability to get to schools in the St. Vrain Valley School District, is available to start no later than January, and has a bachelor's degree. • CIVICA Colorado is seeking in-person math tutors to serve students during the school day on their campus in Milliken. You'll be working with small groups of students in 4th through 8th grade in. Tutoring sessions last 30-45 minutes and you'll work 3-5 days a week. The job comes with a $2400 monthly living stipend, health insurance, and a $4546 education award towards past or future tuition. • The Colorado River BOCES is seeking three high school math teachers to participate in their CEL Synchronous Learning Pilot. This is a project of Colorado Empowered Learning beginning next semester involving teaching live online to high school students in multiple schools across Colorado. (Thanks, Nicolette!)

PAEMST Nominations Due January 9

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) are the highest awards bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teaching. The award recognizes those teachers that have both deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas. Recipients of the award receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States, a paid trip to Washington D.C. for recognition and professional development, and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.

The 2022-2023 award cycle will award teachers in Grades 7-12. To nominate a teacher (or to self-nominate), see the eligibility requirements and submit your nomination at the PAEMST website. Nomination cycles are a bit earlier on the calendar than they used to be, so please note: nominations are due January 9, 2023, and applications must be completed by February 6, 2023. Colorado has a proud history of recognizing Colorado math teachers with PAEMST awards, so please think about the excellent 7-12 teachers of math in your area and nominate them!
